Dearest wife,
Hello darling, here I am at my destination, alive, kicking and not too tired to be interested in life.
I had an excellent trip for the first leg of my journey, but of course it is always a magnificent scenic run. I felt much better after I got a little sleep during the wee hours of Sat morning so I was able to enjoy it fairly well despite the fact I was feeling pretty low.
Although it could not be otherwise as we both know I am pretty lonely and almost wish I had tried as an instructor sometimes so that we needn’t be so far apart, but neither of us could have held our heads up if I had – I know I couldn’t anyway and I’d never have been satisfied with instructing over here while the rest of the boys did my fighting for me. So dearest have patience for the short interim and I’ll come back for you with something to offer soon.
I have assigned another ten dollars a month home and may add ten to that if I can see my way clear to do it, after I have been over there for a month or so.
I’m still sober and intend to stay that way Jill, so don’t worry about me darling.
I’ll write again to-morrow when I have a better idea of how much I am allowed to say.
God bless you sweetheart,
All my love,
Den.

Back again wife. You sweet thoughtful little hug bug. One of the boys just walked in with your letter and darling it is so good to here from you, it hurts. I didn’t expect to here from you the first morning on the station and it really does help so much.
I know how hard it must be for you dearest after those two perfect weeks. I find it hard not too sit and dream and get so lonely and homesick for you, despite all the things we have to keep our minds occupied in this new vista, as well as our work, so I can imagine what it is like for you in the same old grind at the coast, where you are alone so much. But keep your chin up darling – it won’t be for so very long.
Till to-morrow my wife,
Love.
