May 10/42 Dear Mother: It sure is nice here to-day and everybody seems to be out. I went to church in the barracks and downtown to-day too. I don't know what got into me. Maybe because its Mother's day. I have collected quite the sunburn in the last week except for where my hat comes where it is nice and white. Drafts are going out of here pretty fast there are only forty fellows ahead of me to go on draft so I may be going pretty soon but I am going to apply for my 48 this week and I sure hope I get it. I will finish my training Tuesday so I should get it. I guess I will go on guard duty or tarmac duty someplace if we are drafted. I will be sort of glad to get out of here as it is the same old grind. I ordered some more of those pictures I am sure glad you like them. I wish you wouldn't mention Mrs. Hulla in your letters as it seems to spoil the effect of leaving home. Everything is peaceful and serene until you mention her name. A lot more recruits arrived here from Regina last week and I hope I don't look like some of them do in uniforms. Melville should do all right with 50 motorcycles under him. I sure will be glad when the day comes that he will have to salute me, imagine that him having to salute a younger brother boy would I make him toe the mark. I see where Frank Love is now a sergeant in the artillery now he sure is going places. What is Andy doing now did he join the army or what. How is the garage business has it went on the rocks since I left or is it making good progress. I suppose Dad is working hard again? How is Leonard making out in the army does he like it or is he fed up with it. Didn't Dave get called up for service if he didn't something is wrong because I voted yes on the plebiscite. Did I tell you I saw a bunch of Japs go through here on the way to be interned, they sure were a scruffy looking bunch of guys. Rubin Bollinger who used to drive for Smitty is here now and he sure looks funny in his uniform. If I get my 48 I will be home either at 7 o'clock Friday or 7 o'clock Saturday morning. Well good bye for now. Orval
