Diary

May 5 - Nothing unusual happened during the night. The boat steamed off at 5 a.m. Reached Middleton's camp at 9 a.m. after 12 days and nights on the boat. Saw some of the Shell River boys as soon as we landed. Self took the cash box, etc., and made my way to Major Boulton's camp, where I saw Ted and all the boys just going out on parade. Stayed at their camp until own tents were put up. Our boys marched past headed by the 90th Band at 9:30 a.m., and they looked fine. General Middleton very much provoked at our coming in with only two companies, 86 men instead of 428; not according to his orders. Not our fault; done by some officious brat back east. Ted spent most of the afternoon with me; weather quite cold. This is the Fish Creek battle ground.
