Diary

April 14 - All hands up early and found ourselves in Winnipeg. Had breakfast at the CPR restaurant, then fell into ranks to march up Main Street to camp and await orders. Self detailed to help in moving the baggage. Battalion only marched to end of Main Street when Col. Williams got a telegram to proceed direct to the front. All right about-turned and marched back to station. I was rather disappointed at not being able to go home to see them all, but glad to get into action. Had tobacco served out to us at the station, one pound each. Lieut. Wal. Smart, who does not smoke, gave me his. Father, Mother, Frances, Fred and Grace appeared in time to see me off. And later Lou came in his uniform, just had joined Col. Scott's regiment (91st). Off by train for Qu'Appelle at 1:30 p.m. Arrived at Brandon at 6, where the ladies kindly served us tea, ham sandwiches and cakes. Here Col. W. got telegram to proceed to Swift Current. On the train all night.
