My dear Beau and Louise:-

The papers have just come in containing the sad news of Herbert’s and I hasten to offer you my sympathy. I think I feel particularly fitted to understand your feelings as my second son, Farish, sail within the next few day, with the second contingent for the front. I can imagine, to a [?]- degree, what the blow that has fallen on you must mean.

It is a glorious death, that, at least should bring some small comfort to your sore hearts. And you will always have him, the light- hearted boy I have heard he was. Your other children will grow older and leave your roof but Herbert will abide with you the gallant young soldier you sent forth to serve the Empire.

I wish there was something I could say that would be of real comfort to you. Nothing but time and the exalted feeling that you have given a son to your country in her hour of need will prove of solace to you. Believe me you will be much in my thoughts Dorothy in a letter I had from her, a short time ago, told me how much you were missing Herbert

With my love and sympathy to you all

Ever your affectionate [?]
Isabella A. [?]
