Dearest Jean:
This is my first letter of the expedition. We kept a good sharp look-out till we had passed Gordon Head - drinking it all in - and I thinking of it all in terms of you and Mary. We have a state-room, and after Gordon Head fell behind, I pulled off my clothes and crawled into bed - and Bill followed suit. I slept for a good hour - and now feel much refreshed - William is still sleeping.
You were wonderful dear - I am proud of you - and you made our last hours together so happy and wonderful - It is a sweet memory to carry with me, and Mary was so dear too.
This is just a beginning - I don't want to say much more now.
God Keep & look after my dear Jean & baby [?] [?]
