Canadian Officers' Club Room,
27 Corkspur Street, London SW 1.

Tuesday, June 11, 1940

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Martyn,

Your son "Bill" was in London on leave last week and I thought -knowing how anxious you must be - that you might like to know that he was looking very well and was full of good spirit.

Bill may have written about the little club started in October for Canadian officers. It was called the Recreation Room at first, but since we moved into larger quarters a month ago, it is not called the Club Room. Mrs. Massey, the wife of the High Commissioner, was the originator of the idea and has done such a lot to fix up comfortable rooms for the Canadian officers. We have two large rooms and a kitchen, and serve tea and coffee - (good coffee the boys say!) doughnuts, cake - and at lunch time sandwich lunches. We try to keep it as Canadian as possible and I think we have succeeded. The boys seem to like to drop in and spend quite a lot of time there when they are on leave, and we saw quite a lot of Bill during his "five days."

He is a grand boy and I am sure you must be very proud of him. The husband of one of the girls who helps us at the club was on the same ship as Bill and said he was doing a splendid job. I am sure he is.

If there is anything we can do for Bill here, I should like you to feel assured that we shall do it very gladly.

Sincerely yours,

Georgina S. Murphy
