[handwritten heading and note:]

LANCASTER “K”     1:1:44     NO. 23.
BERLIN.     D.O.T.

1st trip in 1944 we had a second dicky and this was a very poor trip to show him a good target. The path finders were very poor and scatered we just hite for the [seacter?] or were we thought it was. We got south of track on the way home and ran into some well predicted Flak that came fairly close. It was the first trip with the perspects cut out of the rear turret.
We were back first again. we also saw a number of planes shot down.

[Editor’s note: A “second dickey” was R.A.F./R.C.A.F. slang for a new/inexperienced pilot flying with an operationally-seasoned crew so as to gain experience prior to active operations with his own crew.]
