Dear Mr Boggs

We have just learned that your son was killed at the front. I do not know how to express myself but I must tell you how deeply all his old comrades of the 88th feel his loss – we all liked him – he was so true –

I know there is no such thing as consolation, but I do hope that a feeling of pride in the great gift you have given to the cause of empire may somewhat lessen the pain.

When you can, please extend our sympathy to Mrs Boggs, – and assure her – that we will never forget him and will honour his memory – the first of the 88th to be on the roll of Honour and one of our very best.

It is hard

Yours very truly
John A Hall
