Dear Emily:-
We just heard the very sad news from France at noon to-day. Some man phoned me this morning to know where Beatrice was so that must have been what he wanted to tell, as Polly phoned very shortly after telling us that John had been killed on Nov 26. I do not know what to write Emily. Trouble of that kind is too terrible for words. You know you have our deepest sympathy in your great loss. Luella said in her last letter that she had received a card from John so he was alright yet, and wondering whatever she would send him for his Christmas present. It would have been over several days before that as her letter was dated Nov. 3rd.
This war is certainly dreadful and just now the clouds seem to hang heavier than ever before since it started. What will be the outcome? No one seems to know.
I have just finished writing to Luella and will not write more this time Emily. only tell you we are all well. Working very hard trying to prepare every acre of land possible for wheat next year. It will be needed badly.
There is One great comfort in trouble, we all know there is One Friend who cannot fail us. We will just live and trust that great good may come out of these terrible times.
Please accept our deepest sympathy Emily
Your loving Brother & Sister
Luther and Mary.
