Dear Father –

I guess by now you have heard of the big engagement that the Canadian Division was in.  I came through it alright but am very sorry to say that Hugh has been missing since.  He and three other fellows were carrying boxes of ammunition up to the firing trench and none of them have returned.

But dad I still have a feeling that he will turn up yet.  Because there is the chance that he has got mixed with some of the other Battalions.  For instance we had some Highlanders and fellows from other Batts mixed with us for a couple of days after returning from the trenches.

We are now resting up in a fairly big barn.  And I expect we will be here for a couple weeks.

Well Dad they are collecting the mail now and will have to close.

Will write again soon.

Your loving son
