My dear Winnie:-

I have just received your very delightful letter and I must first of all congratulate you upon the way you are improving your writing. You must have been taking lessons or practicing, for you are certainly becoming quite proficient. I had a letter from Uncle Cyril two days ago and yesterday one from Mother so you see I have very good reason for considering myself lucky. Glad to hear that all at home are keeping well. I only wish that this war was at an end and I could pay you that promised visit, well one can only hope for the best, meanwhile we must look on the bright side of things, remember to keep the dark cloud turned inside out untill the boys come home.

So Uncle Cyril has joined the Artillery? well I certainly wish him the best of luck, I am sure he will like the life, after a time. Everything is very nice just now, plenty of sunshine and warm weather, I suppose it is the same in Victoria: I wonder how the garden will manage with Uncle Cyril away in camp? I hope Toddy still keeps up with her music, I expect she is becoming quite a musician by this time? Say Win there is one thing I had almost forgotten to do, and that was to write and wish Mother and Bert many happy returns, you know what a forgetful fellow I am. I know they will feel a little hurt at my negligence but I must try and make up for it by writing to them at once. I went on leave a fortnight ago, I did not enjoy myself very much, went to Liverpool and found my old friend Mr Heally, I can assure you we were pleased to meet one another again, by the way, he wishes to be remembered to Bert; I went out to his place in Hay lake and had tea with him. Both Captain and Mrs Heally are dead and their old housekeeper still keeps house for Mr Heally. Well Win I must close for time being, tomorrow I shall try and find time to write Uncle Cyril. Please give my best love to all and don’t forget to write to me as soon as possible, with heaps of love for yourself I remain,

Your affectionate brother

Edgar.
