Dear Mr. Irwin.

I have much pleasure in writing these few lines to you to say that we arrived in England safe. Our voyage was very pleasant, except for a couple of days with was very rough and full of anxious moments. We heard of the sinking of the “Austania” and as we were practically travelling in the same course we did not feel very safe. Every precaution was taken on board. No Lights was admitted, life boats was placed in position for lowering, and sentries placed at every stair-way with instructions to shoot to kill any man, rushing for the boats. We all slept with our clothes on and also our Life belts ready for any emergency. We all attended Church this afternoon to give thanks to God, for the goodness shown to us during the last week. We arrived at Plymouth yesterday (Sat.) at 4 A.M. and reached Camp at 3 A.M. Sunday (May 15th) We had great send offs from Kingston, Montreal and also at our arrival at Plymouth, was very enthusiastic. I am looking forward in a few days, when I shall see Mother, Father, and Brothers. They thought I was in the first contingent which was badly cut up recently and the surprise to them will be great. It is all hustle & bustle here now, unloading rifles, aid, necessaries.- Received you letter and membership card safe and hope to answer my name sometime personally if it is the will of God.

Remember me to all the Kind friends, and also to Mrs. Irwin & Family. Kind regards to all.

I Remain Yours Sincere

William James Stares.
