My Dear Mother:-

It is just a year ago this month you gave me this rist watch and I can tell you its been through the mill. It is the only souvenir I brought from France and it was smashed the afternoon Bert Chalk was wounded. This was early in September 1916 to the right of Moquet Farm in front of Posieres. I was buried at the time and the mud on top of me broke the watch I guess my rifle is still buried there. Well mother I’m leaving for France again tomorrow, and hope you will leave things to me, don’t worry. Ill watch myself. and hope to be back soon. Love to all and I hope you keep well. Im as ever your loving son
