Reserve Battery C.G.H Witley Camp August 12 1918 Dear Mother:- This is Monday but I was on guard yesterday, so was unable to write. We are having terribly hot weather. It is something awful at time. You can imagine what it would be like too when you have new equipment on and marching. I wonder what you are doing now. Are you still in Mount Carmel. I hope you and Mrs.Harrington can get together this winter. Did Herman Mothis ever send you the photograph. If she didn't, write her & see about it. I guess Herman didn't come over after all, although I haven't heard from him yet. Anyway it is a bad time to come over as he would spend his first day winter over here in France and would probably get there just about the worst time. In one month from tomorrow I will be 19 & then I will have the consolation of knowing that when a draft is called, there will be some chance of going. I guess there is next to no chance of my getting in the field of Artillery. I will probably get in the Siege. I had a letter from Cynil Elliot a few days ago. He has finished his first year at Dalhousie & carried off a lot of honors. He is going to Toronto University this fall if he is unable to get in the Army. I see George Piers quite often. He is still playing in the Orchestra of the Theatre here in Camp. Mother, was all my camping stuff sold. I mean the shotgun & rifle & haversack & snowshoes, moccasins, etc. I was just wondering not that it is worrying me at all. My skates are Ross's Ipresurne. At least that is where I left them. Are you going back to Truro when I get back. Truro is the only place I can ever think of as home. I think I send you my "wireless" badge some day soon. I never wear it at all & just hang on to it for fun. I haven't it here or I would enclose it. The only badge I wear is a set of enamelled flags on my sleeve. I don't think I will put up the two blue chevrons that I will be entitled to next month, either. There are too many men around here entitled to four chevrons & in two months a lot will have five. (there are 1st Contigent men). I wish I had enlisted before I did, even if I would have had to spend the time over here. I must close now. Loving Ludlow
