Dear George
I thought I would write you a few lines as this is the first Sunday we have been in the trenches. I am writing this in our dugout away under the ground. Mr. Grant is in the same one here with me and you can tell mother she would like it here. We've got such nice company lots of nice big rats so we have lots of fun killing them and tell mother if ever she sends anything be sure and put in some insect powder. We have had rather wet weather and you may be sure there is always lots of mud. You get just covered with it but I suppose I will get used to it. We get very good food under the circumstances and I always have a large appetite so there is never anything goes to waste, if ever I get back home I will be going to sleep down in the coal bin and think it is all right. I have not seen Jim McAllister since I came here but I suppose I will some of these days. We have not got any mail for over a month but I suppose we will when we get out of the trenches. The mail is gathering up in the trenches every day. I have only got two letters from mother since I came over to England. Well George I suppose it will be about Christmas before I get an answer to this letter and be sure and write to me. I would have liked to send you something for Christmas but I'm afraid I won't be able to get anything here but you people over in Canada don't know what war is. So you may be all thankful you are not here. I will have lots to tell you when I get home again. Well George I think this is all for this time. Hoping you and mother are well.
From your loving father
