My Own Darling Kitty,

Just a wee line to let you know I am well dearest as I know how you worry about me.

I'm so sorry I hav'nt written you before but this is my first oppertunity. You see I have been up in the front line trenches for a while, but am now out in a rest camp back of the line. Gee! there's sure lots of mud in the trenches now as its all thawing up, but if it stays fine for a while it will soon be all right. We got in the trenches a while before we were expected & were a bit short of food for a day of so, but we're getting lots now. I got paid on Sunday so have been getting a few extra's this week at the canteen, we get a franc a day the remainder is held back till we go on leave, or till we return for good.

My address from now on is, Pte.JWEllis 675928, 15 Platoon, 4 Coy. 2nd Batt. B.E.F. Canadians. France.

I met young Buckberough of the 71st the other day & Frank Darrow & Berry are also with this battalion. Most all the fellows I talk too expect an early close of this struggle & it certainly looks that way to me. I only hope & pray that Providence will spare me to return safely to my dear ones. I was to communion on Sunday & we had a Presbyterian minister

Now dearest by the time you get this it will be very near our little darlings birthday so you must give her such a big hug & kisses from her DaDa, how I would love to give them her myself & also her dear mother, but that time will soon be I hope. I cannot buy her anything here but I'll make up for it when I do come home.

Now dearest I told you last time not to send any parcels, but I think it will be O.K. as all the other fellows have got all of theirs, just mark it "clothing" & it will get me all right I have not received any of your letters since I left England but as soon as I'm located I'll get them all right. I got one from mother tonight. Well I guess I'll say goodbye for now Give Mother, Dad, Maggie & Sonny my best love & accept heaps to my little babe & your dear self,

I am ever
Your devoted hubby
Jack
