Wavre Belgium
March 16 1919

Dear Mother:-

Well our mules are no more, at least most of them. We lost 2/3 of them yesterday, turning them over to the belgian government.

I and 5 oothers went with them by train to Antwerp and came back by motor torry[?] through Brussels. I didn't get to bed last night until 3am and the morning before we got up at 4.30 am.

On the way up we stopped a while at Louvain. You have heard of the massacre of Louvain in 1914. Well it is like a city of the dead street after street of empty roofless houses untouched since they were burnt in '14 and no people. The inhabitants were all killed and the Belgians being a people that remain very much in one place, it has never become repopulated so it will remain thus. It is not like the other cities where the people were left alive and quickly rebuilt their houses. It is the first ruined city. I have seen in Belgium (with the exception of the most Western part of Belgium, around [?], where the ballet line was) The rest of Belgium has remained just the same as before the war. But not so with[?] France, by a long shot.

I had some snaps finished at Wavre and am enclosing some.

The way it looks now I think well be back in May sometime. If that is so I can study up and write the provincial exams. I hope that money comes soon before we go to Blighty.

Well will have to close now.

Lovingly
Ludlow
