Camp Hughes. Oct 6/16

Dear Mother:-

Recieved your letter & the cake & both were sure welcome. Am sending you the ring although it isn't very costly its all I can afford at present. I could have got better ones but they had none less than ten dollars & of course that is beyond me. Am writing Bea & sending her my address & another badge for one of her friends.

We havn't the least idea now when we are going & some seemed to think we will spend the winter in Winnipeg but I hardly think it possible. It is sure cold these nights but we have an oil stove & manage to keep quite snug by burning it all night of course it costs us about 15c per day each for oil & we (seven of us) paid seventy cents each to buy it so you see it doesn't cost very much for any of us.

I have been marching up at the bute for the last two days & it has been some snap. But today I am on cook house peeling spuds & I suppose by the time I get through I will be an accomplished house keeper.

That yarn you heard about us being four hundred men short is not true but the reason they have for holding us back was never let out. Am thinking of taking French leave & going into Winnipeg for the week end to see Gladys. The one ninety fifth is going Sunday & it is rumoured that we are going Monday but doesn't say if it is true or not.

Well Mother I must close give my love to all

Your Loving Son

Roy

P.S. When you write be sure & state on the envelope where to return the letter to in case we should leave soon.
