Dear Father:
Have no written you for some time so will scratch off a few lines now while I have a chance. My last letter to Mother was dated the 22nd. The next morning there was an attack south which was favourable. We could hear it proceeding all day but had our part in it. Yesterday we kicked off and have made good start and it is still proceeding. We have sent over enough iron rations to make things lively and it means a general move forward while not of great importance it all helps. It is a pleasant change to be doing something after holding the same ground all the time. Of course it is all at a price. As far as we are concerned it has been all our own way but no doubt it will be livelier when the enemy gets collected and settled again. It has been raining a little the last couple of days but hardly enough worth mentioning.
Received a letter from Elizabeth a couple of days ago and she mentioned her call but did not know when or where she would be going. Also received a parcel from Miss Laking and it was much appreciatted. I am on duty today and it is quite a bit busier than usual. Have to be careful to keep in touch with our advancing so none will run into our own fire. Our men are now holding ground which they have only been able to look at since the start of the war. Was reading the casualty lists tonight and noticed a flying officer by name of Gorman is missing. Am pretty sure it is Gorman's song from Edmn. as he is in the Flying Corps. There is still a chance he may be a prisoner. I guess there have been quite a number I know in the late Canadian lists but so far I have not seen any. Have not heard from Smyth for a long time so do not know how he is getting along.
Have you had any more rent money from Edmn? Also did you hear about the papers sent to Edmn. Lawyers? Suppose will soon have tax notices again and taxes to pay. The year soon comes around. Expect by the time you get this you will be thinking of returning to Guelph as the summer will be getting on. Notice the evenings getting much shorter here already and the shorter days will interfere with fighting. I have been on duty rather steady in the office the last six weeks but there is a possibility I may not need to be on every other day but am not sure.
News is scarce as usual so I guess I will have to conclude for the present.
Hope you are all well as usual.
Love to all
Rob
