Dear Mom & Dad,

I received your most welcome letter last night. Thanks a lot for those band-aids. My hands sure have been a mess lately from the gas, oil, cold nights and skinning the odd knuckle when I can't get the proper tools to work with. I no sooner get the one finger healed up when something happens to the next one, but you know what they say - you're not a good mechanic till you've lost three fingers. We were up on a test flight the other day and this country is beautiful from the air. I hadn't seen it before. We arrived here at night and all we saw was hill-fires and the lighted airstrip. At least one of the surrounding mountains is afire every night. The grass is three to five feet high. Yes, I'm 21 now but feeling just the same. It passed almost unnoticed. I guess the nearest movies would be
but I think its too difficult to get transportation. The boys in the sqdn. live all over Canada from coast to coast. A few from Hamilton Toronto & Niagara Falls. They all are pretty good fellows. You just about have to be a "regular guy" in this outfit. We have a small library with us. I don't get much time for reading. The church activity sounds swell. I answered Cliff's last letter & Christmas card just the other day. It really sounds as though you are having winter weather. Days are still hot & dusty. We could stand a bath every day if we could get the water. I clean up every four or five days. The nights are terribly cold and damp. I wonder if I'll hear from the Gas Co., too. I think I'll put in my three years overseas all right, but the latter part in England. Sorry to hear about Uncle W. and Mr. Jones. I guess it would be okay being an uncle, wouldn't it? Hoping this finds you both well, so long for now --

Joe.
